Tips to Help Your Child Practice Hindi Between Classes (Without Pressure!)

If your child is learning Hindi through MyRoots or another online program, you’re probably wondering: “How can I help them practice at home—without turning it into a chore?” The good news? Practice doesn’t have to feel like homework. In fact, a few simple, stress-free activities can go a long way in keeping your child connected to the language between their scheduled lessons.

Whether you're part of the Indian diaspora or simply eager to help your child embrace their cultural roots, these practical ideas will make Hindi a fun, natural part of your family routine.

1. Start a “Hindi Word of the Day” Challenge

Pick one useful, everyday word your child learns during class—or one from our bonus worksheet—and use it throughout the day. Say it during breakfast, while walking the dog, or while brushing teeth. Encourage siblings or grandparents to join in!

Example: “Aaj ka shabd hai: paani (water).”

2. Read Short Hindi Stories Together

Even if your child is just starting out, illustrated Hindi books or bilingual readers help them hear pronunciation and follow along. Not confident reading Hindi yourself? Try an audiobook or YouTube read-aloud with subtitles.

Tip: Ask your MyRoots tutor for storybook suggestions based on your child's level.

3. Play Hindi Songs in the Background

Language sinks in when kids hear it regularly. Add Hindi nursery rhymes or Bollywood-style kids' playlists to your music rotation. Singing along builds vocabulary and pronunciation naturally—no pressure, just fun.

4. Use Hindi in Everyday Life

Label common household objects (mirror = aaina, door = darwaaza) or use Hindi for short phrases like “Come here” (idhar aao) or “Very good!” (bahut accha!). Your child will start connecting the language to real-life situations.

Bonus: Let your child “teach” the word to another family member. Teaching reinforces learning!

5. Gamify Practice with Flashcards or Apps

Use printable flashcards or free online apps (like Hindi Kids or Drops) for short, 5-minute review bursts. Let kids track their “streaks” or earn points toward screen time or a small reward.

6. Keep It Light: No Quizzes, No Pressure

The goal isn’t perfection. It’s comfort and connection. If your child resists practice some days, that’s okay. Trust that exposure, even without correction, builds familiarity—and confidence will follow.

Why It Matters

Kids learn best when they’re supported both in and outside the classroom. By weaving Hindi into small moments of your day, you’re helping your child feel proud of their roots—and making learning stick without the stress.
